ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΥΠΟΥ

Η Ισραηλιτική Κοινότητα Θεσσαλονίκης εκφράζει τη λύπη και την αγανάκτηση της και καταδικάζει απερίφραστα τον δεύτερο εμπρησμό της Συναγωγής Χανίων και την καταστροφή όχι μόνο του ιστορικού αυτού μνημείου αλλά και του πολύτιμου αρχειακού υλικού που φυλασσόταν εκεί.
Δυστυχώς παρά τους προβληματισμούς που εκφράστηκαν κατά την πρώτη απόπειρα λίγες μέρες νωρίτερα, δεν ελήφθησαν τα απαραίτητα μέτρα για την αποτροπή παρόμοιων φαινομένων. Ευελπιστούμε ότι η πολιτεία θα δράσει άμεσα και θα μεριμνήσει ώστε να συλληφθούν και να τιμωρηθούν οι δράστες της αποτρόπαιας αυτής πράξης.
Σε λίγες ημέρες κλείνουν 65 χρόνια από την απελευθέρωση του Άουσβιτς, ενός τόπου που μαρτύρησαν και θανατώθηκαν εκατομμύρια ομόθρησκοί μας, το μόνο «έγκλημα» των οποίων ήταν ότι ήταν Εβραίοι. Το γεγονός ότι ο εμπρησμός της Συναγωγής των Χανίων συμπίπτει με την τραγική αυτή επέτειο έρχεται να δείξει ότι υπάρχουν ακόμη θιασώτες ακραίων αντιλήψεων.
Παρόμοια γεγονότα που αμαυρώνουν την εικόνα της Ελλάδας πρέπει να εκλείψουν. Οι πολίτες αυτής της χώρας πρέπει να αισθάνονται ασφαλείς στον τόπο τους και να ασκούν ελεύθερα τα θρησκευτικά τους καθήκοντα. Ο αντισημιτισμός που εκφράζεται με τις πράξεις αυτές δεν έχει θέση στη σύγχρονη δημοκρατική Ελλάδα και πρέπει να καταπολεμηθεί και να εξαλειφθεί δια παντός.

The Jewish Community of Thessaloniki issued the following statement regarding the arson of the Synagogue of Chania, Crete that took place on 16/1/2010:

The Jewish Community of Thessaloniki expresses its grief and indignation and strongly condemns the arson of the Synagogue of Chania and the destruction of not only this historic monument but also the priceless archival material that was kept there.
Regrettably, despite the concerns that were expressed following the first attempt a few days earlier, the necessary precautions were not taken to prevent similar phenomena. We hope that the Greek State will take immediate action and see that the perpetrators of this hideous crime are apprehended and punished.
The Commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the liberation Auschwitz, the place of martyrdom for millions of Jews, whose sole “crime” was their religion, is only a few days away. The fact that the arson of the Synagogue of Chania coincides with this tragic anniversary shows that supporters of extreme views exist even nowadays.
Events of this kind stain the image of Greece and should be eliminated. The citizens of our country should feel safe in their homeland and free to exercise their religious duties. Such anti-Semitic actions do not have a place in the contemporary, democratic Greek society and should be combated and eliminated once and for all.
